Les Houches is a pretty village, comprising of a number of hamlets, each with its own chapel and traditional style buildings. Less than 20mins from Chamonix, you have the best of both worlds here - a quiet, family friendly ski-area on one side, and all the vibrancy of Chamonix on the other. At an elevation of 1000m, the lifts from the town take you up to an altitude of 1860m and a network of tree-lined blues and reds bring you back down to base. For more advanced skiers, Les Houches has some of the best powder tree-skiing in the Chamonix valley. The mountain restaurants of Les Houches are nearly all family run and very authentic.
In the mountains around the village, there is also a snow park as well as show-shoeing and cross-country skiing on offer. Les Houches has a good range of restaurants, bars, shops, 2 supermarkets, climbing wall and ice-rink in the winter. In summer, there is a lake and tennis courts. There are also plenty of walking trails from the town to explore and the world famous UTMB trail race passes through the town. The atmosphere in the town is relaxed and friendly and quieter than neighbouring Chamonix. If you’re after some hustle and bustle then the world-famous resort of Chamonix is a short drive or bus ride.
