If you like spacious, light living spaces and are looking for a house with an air of grandeur and style, you will find it here. This beautiful 5-bed manor house has been carefully renovated, retaining all the character of the building. The stunning gardens are a big feature of the property and with stables, woodland and grassland, there is potential for equestrian use.
There is a real feel of history here. The atmosphere of the house is convivial and encourages you to stop and enjoy the views over the garden from the large french windows and doors, or grab a book and cosy up by the fire.
With a small stone building in the grounds and 100m2 attic space in the main house, there is real potential here to increase the living accommodation (subject to planning of course)
With 270m2 habitable space, here’s the layout:
Sitting room with fireplace
Dining room with fireplace
Adjoining studio suite with shower room & WC.
Large landing area
‘Children’s wing’ with 2 bedrooms & bathroom with hip bath and WC.
Guest bedroom with wood pannelling, ensuite bathroom & WC
Master bedroom with ensuite bathroom & WC
100m2 space with conversion potential (subject to planning permission).
The house is connected to mains drainage and whilst the electrical and heating system have been newly installed, the radiators have yet to be put in place.
The house sits on a plot of 9000m2. There are stables for horses, a small stone building to renovate (subject to planning), an orangery, a lavoir, and a swimming pool with poolside terrace area. The gardens here are very special. With topiaried trees, careful planting, lawns and both shaded and sunny spots perfect for al fresco dining, it’s simply a beautiful place to be. The wider grounds are covered with lovely woods and open space for pasture.
The house is in the little village of Auchay which has a restaurant. It’s about a 10min drive to the wonderful historic city of Fontenay le Comte, widely considered (and not just locally!) to be one of the most beautiful towns in France. The centre of the town dates back to mediaeval times, this is surrounded by the Renaissance city which was built in the 15th and 16th centuries and finally the modern outer city where all the useful shops you might need are found.
The area is a haven for nature-lovers. The house is just up the road from the River Vendée which is great for picnic spots and river dips. The Poitevin marshes, known as the Green Venice of the West, where you can punt along the canals and quietly watching the flora and fauna as you slide past. Meanwhile, Mervent forest is the ideal spot for walking, horse-riding and cycling.
Fontenay is 25miles inland from the Vendée coastline. La Rochelle and the stunning Ile-de-Ré are both under an hour away. Poitiers if a one hour drive as is Nantes.
