If you're in the fortunate position of being able to work from anywhere and are thinking of making the most of your freedom and having a base in France, a good internet connection is a key consideration and essential to make the plan feasible. The french government has committed to ensuring every property in France as a 'very high speed' internet connection within the next two years. The upgrade programme got under way in 2013 and is scheduled for completion by the end of 2022. The latest figures relate to progress made up to 2018 and 85% of properties now have 'good' internet, with 56% reaching 'very good' speeds. That reflects the coverage extending largely in highly populated areas.
For 2020, the schedule dictates that every single property in France will be able to connect to the internet and achieve a minimum connection speed of 8 Mbit/s. By 2022 that connection speed for every property will be a minimum of 30Mbit/s.
You can keep track of the progress of the project here:
And a great resource is being developed where you can view the internet speed achievable across France, even down to house by house level of detail if you zoom in. It has the potential to be a very useful tool when creating a shortlist of properties of interest.
The government generated map does not document current speeds achievable, but does detail the progress as it's being made with the upgrade programme.
